Most of us like movies. Even if not on a daily basis, everybody likes to sit down from time to time, watch a movie and relax. From the beginning of time, the end of the 19th Century, people were drawn to movies, and the industry had a remarkable progress, from the under one minute, soundless, black and white flicks to today's special effects and 3D cinemas.
Many movies were produced after more or less successful books, and similarly to books, people like to talk about movies they have seen, share their impressions, analyze the characters, idolize or vilify them, compare the events with those of everyday life.
Every movie has a story, some characters, scenery, etc. I don't know about you, but when I sit down to watch a movie I like to watch without knowing what happens next, I like to see the action unfold naturally and when it is the case, to be surprised by some of the events, the way it was intended by the producers.
Unfortunately this is not the case with some people. They have the supernatural talent to go into a room, speak a sentence and ruin the whole viewing pleasure of a person in no more than 3 seconds. They do this with perfect timing, like with a sixth sense - by the way, Bruce Willis is...ooops - and most of the time they don't even realize the crime (yes, bloody murder) they have just committed.
There is the type you meet on the way to the cinema, and when you tell them you are going to see a certain movie, they start to narrate the whole story, telling every spoiler right until the villain dies, the lovers get married, the butler gets arrested for murder or a certain Jedi knight finds out about his father. The good part is that you have just saved the price of a ticket.
And there is the type that watches a movie with you, a movie which he had seen before, and before every main event, says something like: watch how cool it is when the Belgian dwarf beats up the big tough guy in the final showdown, or you won't believe what happens to The King of the World when the Unsinkable sinks. You will never invite them to a joint movie night ever again. More popcorn for you.
And finally there is the worst kind, the one who has seen every movie, knows every character by heart, and finds pleasure in telling it all to everybody, interested or not. There is nothing that can stop this human lexicon of movie knowledge. You just make the mistake to talk about something that has a remote connection to any movie and in a couple of minutes you shall find yourself surrounded by spoilers to every movie you were ever going to see.
Don't get me wrong, I like to talk about movies I have seen, but only with people who have already seen them too. A few little appetizers about the movie are all right, like who the main actors are, the general theme of the movie, the genre, similarity to other movies, etc. These just make you want to see the movie even more. But please, pretty please, with sugar on top, DO NOT EVER tell, write, whisper, type, mimic or sing spoilers when I am in a 100 km radius.
